First day of German

I don’t spreche Deutsch.  Not even a little.  That’s what I found out today in my first German class.  We spent 3 hours going over even the easiest of German phrases, My name is…, I come from… in…, I speak…, My hobbies are…  Even after all that, I couldn’t remember one thing when my host sister asked today.  I’m the dumb kid in school ;) .  Maybe it’s not that bad, but it’s going to be challenging, but that’s fun.  I’ve only been here four days, and I’m already really frustrated that I can’t understand anything that’s going on around me.   Over the next 6 weeks, though, I will definitely spreche Deutsch.

Matt and I rode the bus/train downtown today, with no hiccups.  Now that we have passes for all the transportation systems, we don’t have to worry about dealing with petty cash and communicating with bus drivers to buy tickets.  No joke, the first day, I practiced my German phrase like 25 times so I could say it correctly to the bus driver, and I still needed to repeat myself for him to understand.  It’s harder than I thought, being Mr. American and all.  The weather here is great, a lot like SD at this time, without the risk of snow, but it is a bit more temperate.  No big swings like we get in the Midwest.  The food is really good, as well.  There are German bakeries EVERYWHERE, no joke, they are just about every 50 ft. when you get into the downtown area.  That’s a great thing, though, because their bread is magnificent.  You know the bread that makes those big pretzels?  That bread was invented in Stuttgart.  And they make it in loaves.  It’s unbelievable.  I could eat 50 a day.  Also, (Mom and Dad stop reading) they don’t have any sort of open container laws, so we walk into a shop, buy a beer, and then walk around town with it.  That’s pretty nice, and, since I’m taking all public transportation, I don’t have to worry about driving.  (Ok, M&D, you can read that last part…and be proud! :) ) Anyways, I am starting to get to know some of the other students here, and they are all pretty cool.  They are from all over the US, Canada, Singapore, China, and Mexico.

After German class today, we all hopped on to take a bus tour of Stuttgart.  (Afternoon subject courses start tomorrow.  I’m taking Transportation and Urban Planning.  It should be sweet.) As for the tour. Our tour guide was a Swabian (local dialect of German) woman who was completely flighty and a bit nuts, I think.  Anyway, she would just chat away on the microphone on this bus, talking all sorts of nonsense that made sense only about half of the time.  To be honest, she was quite entertaining.  However, after the trip went past the 2 hour mark, 1/3 of the bus was sleeping.  I got in about 20 mins.  Solid nap.  :)

After that, Matt and I were too beat to do much else, so we headed back to our Host-Family’s place, checking out all the different routes to get there and back.  We’re still on the lookout for the perfect route, hitting all the timings just right, but we’ll get there.

I’m hoping tonight I will begin to get acquainted to Germany’s time zone.  I still feel awake late at night here and sleepy during the day.  It will just come with time, I suppose.

Here are some pics that I’ve taken over the first few days, check ‘em out:

That is me with my magnetically attracted silverware.  It wasn’t supposed to be.  It fried my brain.  At least that’s my excuse.

That’s the TV tower we climbed to get a great birds-eye view of Stuttgart.

That’s the view from the aforementioned TV tower. Pretty cool.

Getting Settled

I just landed here in Stuttgart, and man, are things different.  The guy at the passport-check kept asking me if I was in the Army.  He did let me through, though.  I have stamp #1 on my passport.  Sweet.  All of my bags made it.  I didn’t think they would.  My host-sister, Ally, and her boyfriend Ron picked me up from the airport, along with my house-mate Matt, from Purdue.  We hopped on the freeway, and all these German automobiles were cruising around following traffic signs that I couldn’t comprehend.  Of course, there were still McDonalds.  There are always McDonalds.

My host-family lives in a building, similar to an apartment complex, that houses many families in large, 4-bedroom setups.  It is very nice, but minimalist.  Conservation is a huge here, and in my host family we work to conserve and handle electricity, water, and waste as efficiently as possible.  I have my own room, and Matt and I share a bathroom.  It is quite nice, but homey.  Super clean.  I’ll need to pick up after myself. ;)   There are a number of house rules, but I have no problem with that.  I just hope I can remember them.  I’m terrible at short-term memory stuff like that.
Tonight, we’re going out, maybe to a Mexican place.  That was the original plan, but we’re trying to figure out the reservation.
I hope I can just chill for the first few days, maybe get a lay of the land here in Stuttgart, and go from there.  I’m pumped to be riding the bus and the subway all over the place.  School starts on Tuesday, with a welcome-gathering sometime on Sunday, I think.  Well, that’s all I know.  It’s not much.  :)

Heading off…

img00411So here I am…sitting at Omaha Eppley Airfield.  I’m heading off to Germany in about 2 hours.  It will be a long day of travel, I think I’ll be in Airports and airplanes for about 16 to 17 hours.  If only all had free WiFi.  It was tough to leave Ms. Emily Conway at the terminal.  2 months apart is not popular, neither with me or her.  I am offiically in non-school mode, though.  I am really glad that classroom work is over, I was ready for that.  I can only look forward to the trip I’m going to have.  Two months doesn’t seem like long, but it seems like a lifetime in a strange place.  That’s also the fun of it.

I’m not going to write much this first time, I’ll save that for the later posts, but I promise to keep you all posted!

(As you can tell from this post, my mind is completely scattered.  I’m fairly scared stiff to be heading overseas for a couple months, and I don’t know how I feel about leaving my friends and family for this long, but it’s something that I really feel like I should do.  It’ll be great…that’s what I keep telling myself that, anyway.)

Twevolution at SDSU

twitter-_-homeI’ve posted to a limited degree in the past about Twitter, the microblog utility that has become the #3 social media website in the world. It’s pretty cool, but it’s just starting to hit the mainstream.

Here’s my 30-second salesman pitch:  with Twitter, you can communicate with others dynamically using the tools of the web, is accessible through any mobile phone, is an easy way to get to a HUGE web community…and it’s only getting better.

The Nerdophiles are starting to spread the word to their not-so-nerdy friends and they’re passing twinvitations to friends of theirs as well. In fact, there are a number of SDSUans that have begun to tweet, and which may or may not have been profiled in prior posts…here’s a (probably not complete) list:

The Union at SDSU

@theunionatsdsu

SDSU Students’ Association

@SDSU_SA

University Program Council

@upcpreview

SDSU Collegian

@sdsucollegian

Collegian Sports

@CollegianSports

In addition to all these folks, there are plenty others who personally use Twitter from these groups as well, if you haven’t yet, you might soon be in the minority…TWEET! :)

And if you’re an SDSU group and you do tweet, let me know! I’d love to check our your twitter feed and so would others!

Facebook updates, then un-updates, its Terms of Service

welcome-to-facebook-facebook-01Early this month, Facebook changed its Terms of Service. This change in their terms was subtle, but crazy, at it would seemingly give FB license to use your uploaded content FOREVER. Even if you deleted your account. That seems like it would be a pretty decent invasion on users’ expectations of privacy. Before, any legal claim to content was ended when you deleted your account. THIS IS A BIG CHANGE.

Mashable reports on the Terms of Service here. It’s a good article.

Originally, Mark Zuckerberg (23 yr. old founder of facebook, who just happens to be worth about $700 million) responded to the terms question by basically saying, “Trust us. We won’t use your stuff, even though we have full legal right to.

This brought a ton of outcry. Many bloggers and social media experts were telling everyone they could about the changes. Thousands joined “change the Terms of Service back” facebook groups trying to lobby Zuckerberg, et al. This seemed similar to the Beacon controversy of last year. In that case, Facebook encroached on users’ privacy, users protested, and Facebook retreated with it’s proverbial tail between its legs.

This turned out to be no different. Late last night, Mark wrote a new post. It said, “we’re going back to our old TOS while we figure it out.” Additionally, FB created the Facebook Bill of Rights & Responsibilities. This is a group to discuss how Facebook moves forward with this issue and how it approaches future user-impacting decisions.

I think this group, if it works, is a great step in the right direction. I’m just disappointed that it took TWO public outcries about privacy issues with such a user-centered service like Facebook.

SDSU Collegian on Twitter

twitter.com/sdsucollegianTo everyone who’s into this whole Web 2.0 revolution, (That would be you, Mr./Mrs. Person Readingmyblog) the SDSU Collegian has recently started a Twitter account.

Twitter is a “micro-blogging” platform where its users post blurbs of 140 characters or less. The users will post everything from what they ate for dinner that evening, to links of pictures or articles online; even the whereabouts of their travels.

The SDSU Collegian, SDSU’s Student Newspaper, uses its twitter feed to publish its news stories, and even live-tweeting (Twitter posts are called “tweets”) from an SA Meeting. Check out its feed here, and see if its of your liking!

Blogging @ SDSU?

usd-blog-serverHow many student organizations at SDSU have their own blog? I don’t know of any. ZERO. That is extremely depressing. I am probably in the 90th percentile of tech savvyness at SDSU, and I don’t know of a single student group that has their own blog. Blogs are the basics, the very beginning of the media presence of today.

That’s not the case at the University that boasts “South Dakota’s Team.” (Yeah, right. Like a team that averages about a third our average attendance can boast that…for another day…) USD has a school server that’s dedicated to nothing other than blogs. The school hosts blogs for any campus organization that wants it. It would eliminate much of the hassle for student orgs posting online (now limited to terrible FrontPage ‘98 products or Facebook groups) all while providing a reliable medium for community conversation.

I’ve already pitched the idea to VP of IT, Mike Adelaine. We have the capability, and it’s going to be something included in the new website rollout. Oh yeah, the one that’s already months behind. That one.

Speaking of Alltel…

Last week I saw a new Alltel Commercial…where’s Verizon?

I’m sure most of you are familiar with Chad, our buddy from the Alltel commercials preaching the benefits of “My Circle.” These ads showed the ever-so-cool Chad easily one-upping the wannabes from AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. For the longest time, there was a nice little Verizon representative, too…where did he go?

In the latest ad, a basketball game script, he is very noticeably absent. Must have been still in the locker room. Actually, I bet he was just chilling in the hallway, because he just stole Chad’s girlfriend…namely, all his wireless service. :)

(To those of you who aren’t obsessed with cell phone companies, Verizon Wireless recently purchased Alltel, and will take over their cellular service within the next few quarters)

iPhone Coming Soon to SD?

As part of Verizon’s scheduled acquisition of Alltel, VZW agreed to sell some of its assets. A recent story in the Wall Street Journal (It’s subscriber only, so I’ll do my best to analyze) named AT&T as a company interested in purchasing the service areas that Verizon is giving up. It also notes that those assets, if AT&T is the buyer, are likely to be less-urban areas that AT&T does not currently serve.

Hmm…if my anecdotal reasoning is correct…that situation sounds A LOT like South Dakota-ish places, right? I think so. It may be my rabid yearning for an iPhone that is driving my suspicions, but it’s a pretty awesome possibility nonetheless.

There is an apparent snag, though. If AT&T acquired Verizon’s assets, they would take over the virtual monopoly that a Verizon/Alltel merger would leave, and there might still be remaining monopoly concerns. Additionally, there is a difference between AT&T’s GSM network and Verizon/Alltel CDMA network. Are they compatible? Is it just flipping a switch? That I don’t know…but the possibility of a future iPhone sure has me excited.
