The longer I serve in a leadership role, the more I learn that it is a path of ups and downs. All the nights spent doing something other than homework ensure that there’s an equal number of nights where homework must consume you. I’ve had many of the former, and too few of the latter.
Yesterday, i had a day that was solid with meetings or class from 8 A.M. to 9 P.M., on an hour of sleep. The homework with a Monday deadline demanded production, while the weekend of NDSU football and family meetings also had demanded attention. It all shakes out in the end, though. And I truly think it’s worth it. The great times I will have and successes of SDSU students will make the long days, sleepless nights, and criticism all worth it.
Why do we do it? There was a great song by the Lunar Funk Theory (were very talented, check them out!) who played at the Battle of the Bands this past week on campus. It was titled “Why do we do it.” It was a great testament to why they make music. It spoke about what change they make in the world around them, and in their own lives. People ask me why I do what I do. I do it because it’s the best thing I’ve ever done. I do it because those who really make a difference have to work at it. I do it because of my 30 extraordinary peers that I have the privilege to work with. Man, does it get crazy sometimes, and man do I get bad grades sometimes, but it’s the most fun and rewarding thing I’ve done. I can’t lose sight of that.

I really enjoyed the last half of the last paragraph. I think you summed up how students feel while in leadership roles on campus perfectly. I appreciate the work you do, Chris, and I couldn’t imagine having your responsibilities while still trying to do well in class. You seem to do it effortlessly and that doesn’t go unnoticed.
Thanks, Kayla. College is a different animal if you’re balancing being a student with everything else you do, but you do it quite well.
